Solar Panels and Your BER Rating

Solar PV panels are one of the most popular home energy upgrades in Ireland. But how much do they actually improve your BER rating? Here's what to expect, and how to get the most from solar in combination with other upgrades.

Do Solar Panels Improve Your BER?

Yes, but the improvement is more modest than many people expect. A typical residential solar PV system (around 4kWp) will improve your BER by approximately half a grade to one full grade. The exact impact depends on your home's size, orientation, current electricity usage patterns, and existing BER rating.

The reason the improvement is relatively modest is that the BER calculation accounts for solar generation based on standardised occupancy assumptions, not your actual electricity usage. The real-world savings on your electricity bills may be much greater than the BER improvement suggests.

Solar PV and the BER Calculation

The DEAP software used to calculate BER ratings accounts for solar PV by estimating how much of the generated electricity is used within the home versus exported to the grid. Under standard assumptions, a south-facing 4kWp system in Dublin generates approximately 3,400–3,800 kWh per year. The BER credit depends on how much of this offsets the home's lighting, pumps, fans, and electrical heating demand.

SEAI Grant for Solar PV

The SEAI provides a grant of up to €1,800 towards the cost of a solar PV system. As with all SEAI grants, you'll need a before-works and after-works BER assessment. You can also combine the solar grant with other upgrade grants (insulation, heat pump, windows) in a single project for maximum benefit.

Combining Solar With Other Upgrades

Solar panels have the biggest impact on your BER when combined with other upgrades, particularly a heat pump. For a combined approach, the One Stop Shop grants can fund solar alongside insulation and heating upgrades. See real before and after results from homeowners who made similar improvements. Here's why: a heat pump runs on electricity, and solar panels generate free electricity. Together, they create a virtuous cycle, the solar panels effectively power your heating system for a significant portion of the year, dramatically reducing both your energy costs and your BER's primary energy figure.

A common high-impact upgrade package is insulation + heat pump + solar PV. This combination can take a D-rated home to A3 or B1, and the combined SEAI grants can cover a substantial portion of the cost.

Is Solar Worth It for BER Alone?

If your only goal is to improve your BER by the maximum amount for the least cost, solar panels are not the most efficient upgrade, insulation and heating system improvements typically deliver more BER improvement per euro spent. However, solar panels offer excellent real-world value through reduced electricity bills, export payments under the micro-generation scheme, and future-proofing your home. The BER improvement is a bonus on top of these practical benefits.
